Summary

This week we’re joined by notorious tie-guy Travis Northup, who just dropped his review of Borderlands 4, and who also went hands on with some large scale maps in Battlefield 6 at a preview event. What do these two games have in common, besides being shooters? They’re both shaping up to be returns-to-form for a couple series that haven’t stuck the landing with their core fanbase in recent installments. But sure enough, Gearbox has stuck to its guns (all bajllion of them) getting the looter-shooter in fighting shape, and it seems its first foray into the open-world space is fairly successful, aside from some rough technical edges. Meanwhile, EA and DICE clearly pulled out all the stops in making Battlefield 6 as big and loud as possible, but it also sounds like it’s going back to basics, cribbing from series highlights, going so far as featuring a beloved Battlefield 3 map, Operation: Firestorm. On a completely unrelated note, we were also joined by Bennett Foddy (of QWOP fame) to discuss the new open-world hiking game, Baby Steps, which is quite literally a walking simulator - and a very challenging one at that. Bennett discusses some of his inspirations and influences, which yes, include the Dark Souls games and their ilk, which seem downright easy compared to Baby Steps at times. Beyond and hello and welcome once again to IGN's weekly PlayStation show.

0:03.2

I'm your host Max Scoville and coming up we are talking about a couple long-awaited shooter sequels,

0:07.5

Borderlands 4, and Battlefield 6, and we'll also be chatting with the folks behind the literal walking simulator baby steps.

0:13.8

Let's get into it. Greetings, everybody. This week, I'm joined by Jada Griffin and our good pal Travis, Ty Guy Travis Northup, who has been very busy. How are you guys doing? Beyond. Beyond.

0:34.6

Beyond. Now, Travis, you are, you keep busy. You do a lot of previews and reviews and stuff like that. You got a chance to check out Battlefield 6, which isn't out yet. We're going to talk about that in a little bit. But more importantly, you've also been playing a bunch of Borderlands 4. In fact, you reviewed Borderlands 4. And I want to hear about that. I want to hear what you think about it.

0:55.0

Yes. Is it good? Yeah. It is good. It's quite good. I gave it an eight out of 10, if you haven't seen my review. It is a awesome return to form for the series where they try some new stuff, specifically the open world and also kind of soft reboot the story with a new setting and a bunch of new characters and sort of just like start over and try something new.

1:16.2

But also has all of the same borderline stuff that you love like in sains amounts of loot,

1:22.5

clap trap running around being annoying and you know vault hunters shooting things in the face and being,

1:28.7

being crazy.

1:30.3

So it's, for those who don't know my history at borderlands, like I really, really loved

1:37.5

the first two games and they were sort of my, the beginnings of my obsession with the

1:42.3

looter shooter genre, which is sort of how I cut my teeth in the games industry,

1:45.9

is just being the guy who like knows about looter shooters all over the place.

1:50.2

And with Borderlands 3 and kind of that long gap in between two and four, there was a moment, actually a stretch of several years, where it sort of felt like

2:03.9

the Borlianz franchise was falling behind in the genre that it had once created. And, you know,

2:09.8

there were live service games like Destiny and stuff that sort of were doing a whole bunch

2:13.7

of new stuff and moving forward to the genre. And then Borderlands 3 came out and felt like,

2:17.8

oh, this is sort of a throwback,

2:19.8

a little nostalgia,

2:20.7

but also kind of stuck in the mud.

2:22.4

And so this was Borderlands 4,

2:25.6

I think recognizes that and tries just enough new stuff
