That was where war secretary Edwin Stanton conducted business.

President Lincoln lay dying in a bedroom a few feet away

and Stanton methodically organized the military

and civilian law enforcement to find the president's killer.

He dropped an avalanche of orders on his assistance.

They burned up the telegraph line sending instructions

and news reports all over the country.

Stanton sent guards to the homes of every member of the cabinet.

He ordered military units to kick it into high gear,

double the guards, man every gun, put the forts on high alert.

He shut down Washington City.
