Welcome to the Sports Motivation Podcast. This is your host, Nees Showbo. Today is books and bars where I break down excerpts from my favorite books, clips from my favorite rap songs, and I break down the bars. Today I'm breaking down a book. And this book is called How to Be Free, an ancient guide to the Stoic Life. And it's by Epictetus, who is a famous, one of the more well-known Stoic philosophers.

And when I got this book, I thought it was going to be something different than what I already had.

0:33.6

But it wasn't.

0:35.1

And I wasn't disappointed by that.

both interpretations. So anyway, I say that because if you already have the N. Carridian

or the art of living by Epictetus, those will do. But this is a clip from that. So let me break this down. And I want to

1:30.8

really get into, I want to get into this. This is really important because I feel like it's kind of

1:36.7

like the Bible. You read it. And it's really easy to take a very direct approach to the

1:42.8

interpretation. But it's important to like really sift through

1:45.6

it and decide what it means for you.

1:47.8

So here's what he says.

1:49.4

And this is on page 23 if you are reading from the same book.

1:53.4

Look, I feel like I'm in church, you know, when the pastor says page number.

1:58.4

Anyway, if you want your children and your wife and friends to survive,

2:02.8

no matter what, you are silly. For you are wanting things to be up to you that are not up to you,
