Jason, you have a new book.

It is called Outside the Wire.

What does that mean?

And what is the book about?

Well, first of all, John, thank you for doing this.

This is kind of like me inviting you over to my house so that you can cook me dinner.

So I certainly appreciate you doing it.

Let's hope this goes better than that would go.

It would be better than me cooking us dinner.

I'm sure of that.

But outside the wire is a military term that means leaving the safety of the base.

So like in Afghanistan, we used the term to mean, you know, going through the front gates,

going into a more dangerous area.

And I named the book that because for me, once I had gone outside the wire for the first

time, and then later, you know, and did it several times during my deployment.

And then later went into politics, figuratively going outside the wire in politics just never

felt like a particularly big deal to me.
