Summary

In this episode we examine one of the most foundational claims in Mormonism: the translation of the Book of Mormon. Most Latter-day Saints grew up hearing a very specific story. Joseph Smith sat at a table, the gold plates were present, and he translated the ancient record through divine power. But when we turn to… Read More »Book of Mormon Translation

Welcome to another episode of Mormon Discussion Podcast. I'm your host Bill Real, and today we're

0:05.3

going to dive into the Book of Mormon Translation. The official story that most people grew up

0:12.1

hearing is simple. Joseph Smith translated the book of Mormon by reading characters engraved

0:18.5

on gold plates, using sacred instruments called the Yermen

0:23.1

Thumum, but known as the Nephite spectacles. The plates were physically present. They were

0:30.6

the source of the words. Joseph's role was to translate what was written on them.

0:37.3

Now this makes intuitive sense. If you're

0:39.8

translating a physical record, the record must be involved in the process. But eyewitness accounts

0:46.3

from the people who watched Joseph translate describe something very different. Joseph did not

0:53.6

read directly from the plates. Instead,

0:55.6

he placed a small stone, into a hat, put his face into the hat to block out light,

1:03.1

and dictated the words that appeared to him. The plates were often not even in the room.

1:09.7

Sometimes they were covered. Sometimes they were hidden elsewhere entirely.

1:15.2

The stone that Joseph used was not unique to the Book of Mormon translation. It was the same

1:20.8

seer stone that he had previously used while working as a treasure digger. He claimed it helped him locate buried treasure underground.

1:31.5

Now this creates an obvious question. If the words appeared in the stone and the plates were not

1:37.4

being consulted, what role did the plates actually play? If Joseph could produce the text without physically referencing the plates,

1:47.6

then the plates were not necessary for the translation itself. The stone alone was sufficient.

1:56.6

Now this matter is because Joseph's claim was that he translated an ancient record written on physical plates.

2:04.1

But the described method does not involve reading the plates.

2:08.4

In fact, scribes and witnesses to the translation, along with D&C, Doctrine and Covenants, Section 10,

2:21.1

imposed that Smith was doing a literal translation of reformed Egyptian characters into English in what is described as a tight translation method.
