Summary

We are pleased to share an episode from the Clearer Thinking Podcast featuring Open to Debate Founder Robert Rosenkranz in conversation with Spencer Greenberg. About this episode: What makes a forum truly open-minded rather than performative? When does listening change minds instead of just hardening identities? Are we teaching citizens to separate facts from frames? Do the best debates surface values as well as evidence? How can we reward calm argument over outrage economics? What reforms reduce polarization without dulling real disagreement? Should any topic be off-limits in a free society? Is philanthropy giving back—or building what’s missing? Should generosity optimize impact or express the values we want to grow? How much risk is acceptable when the upside is transformative? Robert Rosenkranz is a dedicated philanthropist, an advocate for intellectual engagement, and respected commentator on philanthropy. He founded Delphi Capital Management and championed the renowned Open to Debate debate series. Robert’s latest book, The Stoic Capitalist, explores the intersection of ancient Stoic wisdom and modern capitalism. When he’s not crafting ideas, Robert dedicates his time to supporting the arts, advancing education, and contributing to public policy through The Rosenkranz Foundation. Hi, everybody. I'm John Donvan, host and moderator in chief at Open to Debate,

0:03.6

and today we're sharing a special conversation from our friends at the Clearer Thinking with Spencer Greenberg podcast.

0:09.5

This episode of Spencer's show features our founder, Robert Rosencrantz.

0:13.6

And in it, Robert shares the story behind Open to Debate and why he founded it and why he still believes very much,

0:19.8

more than ever, that nuanced civil discourse

0:21.5

is so important, more so today than ever before. We think you're going to find this discussion

0:26.3

insightful. We think you're going to find it actually inspiring, and it's a reminder of why debate

0:31.4

still matters. Please enjoy. Robert, welcome. Spencer, pleasure to be here. Why do you think debate is so important?

0:40.3

Well, I think it embodies a lot of the stoic values that I talk about in the book. It's the

0:47.0

idea of open-mindedness. It's the idea of critical thinking. It's the idea of certain amount

0:53.1

of humility about one's own views. It's a way of

0:57.9

bringing into the public square, what I call it, contempt-free zone, where people can appreciate

1:05.4

the nuances of complex issues. They can hear the other side with respect.

1:11.8

They can privilege facts over emotions.

1:14.8

They can privilege logic over ideology.

1:18.6

So it seems to me to be a very important way of bringing something to the public square

1:23.9

that's sorely missing right now.

1:26.4

Do you think there's been a decline in debate?

1:28.8

Well, there's certainly been a decline in the level of public discourse. I think our political

1:33.7

culture has gone in the wrong direction in a world in which almost everything else has gone

1:38.2

in the right direction. It's fascinating to read essays by politicians and think, wow, you could never imagine the politicians

1:46.4

of today writing these. No, it's true. One of the books that I cite in Stoic Capitalist is
