This past weekend our episode covered the story of sexual assault survivor Emily Doe, who was attacked by a convicted sex offender and lifetime sex offender registrant Brock Turner back in January of 2015. Many felt that his lenient

sentence not only added insult to injury for the young woman he victimized,

it ended up costing the judge who handed him to sentence his job. It sent a very

toxic and warped message that if you just so happen to attend a prestigious

university and you just so happen to know how to swim kind of well,

then that mitigates your culpability in terms of the crimes that you were convicted of committing.

I still can't get of the crimes that you were convicted of committing.

I still can't get over those words Turner's father said in court.

A steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of 20 plus years of life. You probably noticed that that episode was one big long monologue directed squarely at Brock Turner from not just me but from

many of us and it's just not because of the crimes that Turner was convicted of.

It was a terrible night and a terrible crime.

I will admit, under certain circumstances, I may have been able to afford Turner a measure of understanding.

There are indeed some mitigating factors that could have been considered.

Yes, he was young.

Yes, up until that fateful night, his contact with law enforcement had been minimal at best, and nonviolent.

He is hardly the boogie man who lurks in the darkness looking to strike violently

at his unsuspecting victims.

Turner on the surface could very easily be overlooked as just the average,

everyday, young person

the boy next door the all-American blah blah blah

but in some ways knowing what we know about him, that makes him even worse than the

bogeyman lurking in the shadows.
