Summary

In this inspiring episode Helen and Sarah interview people working on the front-line during lock-down to get a window in the world of their experiences. Sarah has a conversation with Ben Levinson, a 600-pupil primary school Headteacher working in East London about how he coped with the most difficult two weeks of his career and why taking care of your mental health matters more than ever right now. Helen speaks to Dr. Jamie Strachan, a Consultant in Critical Care and Anaesthesia about staying calm under pressure and taking each day as it comes. Sarah chats with Jo McMahon a Care Home Manager who started her role just weeks before lockdown and leads a team of over 100 staff and looks after residents whose age range from their 20’s to their 90’s. And Helens talk to venture capitalist, and now home-schooler to her three children, June Angelides about the realities of working and parenting all at the same time.  Hosted on Acast. Hi everybody. I'm Helen Tupper. I'm one of the co-hosts of the Swiggly Careers podcast and I'm here virtually of course with Sarah. Hi everyone. And this is a very special episode of our podcast and one that we're particularly proud of and just happy that we're able to bring these conversations to you. In the UK, it's Mental Health Awareness Week and we wanted to find out how people are working

0:22.2

on the front line. So whether that's doctors, teachers, carers or parents who now find themselves

0:28.3

homeschooling and working at the same time, we wanted to understand a little bit about how their

0:33.6

work has changed and how they're taking care of themselves and others during what feels

0:37.9

like a really tough time. And all our episodes supporting Mental Health Awareness Week have been

0:42.6

really kindly supported by the BPA UK Foundation. The foundation is a charity and their purpose is to

0:48.4

help people live longer, healthier and happier lives, which sounds pretty good to me. And they fund

0:53.5

loads of really practical

0:54.5

projects that have a really positive impact on people's mental well-being. So things like

0:58.7

workshops for educators, they do some amazing work with mind, working with young people in particular,

1:04.5

and they fund community mental well-being projects. So they're the perfect partner for our

1:08.8

podcast in general and for this week in particular.

1:11.7

So we're going to start this week's podcast and you'll hear me interviewing Ben Levinson.

1:16.1

Ben is the head teacher of a primary school with 600 pupils in East London.

1:21.1

And he's had to manage all the transition for both his staff, his teachers, his parents and his kids. It's been a phenomenal task,

1:29.8

but he's definitely somebody who's up for it. And there's so much to learn from him. And it's so

1:34.4

insightful just to get a window into somebody else's world. So I really hope you enjoy the

1:38.3

conversation. I'm fortunate and we're fortunate as a school that kind of well-being, emotional health, mental health has absolutely been a core part of what we've done, really ever since I got there six years ago.

1:52.5

But certainly over the last few years, that's been a core part of what we've done as a school.

1:57.2

We talked about focusing on now.

1:59.9

You know, I think there was a lot of both focusing forward and focusing backward and throughout this process.

2:05.6

So that idea of focusing on what is going on today, tomorrow, was really important.
