Hello and welcome back to the great albums podcast. My My name is Brian and it is bonus song Thursday.

Bill is still out out west with his wife and so again I am flying solo.

So today for bonus song Thursday we are going to do a song called Till I Die by the Beach Boys. Of course,

this past Monday, we did the Smiley Smile album that came out in 1967. So this album, this song, rather, this song came out in 1971 on an album called Surf's Up, and I chose this album,

or this song from this album in particular, because the album, the title track came from the

sort of now at this point fabled smile sessions and was the

last track on the album and sort of lent some credence to the fact that when the world lost

smile, they kind of lost something special.

And I'll leave it up to you, the listener, to go track down the Beach Boys song surfs up,

which if you've never heard it, the title does it no justice.

And it is kind of more a title done in irony than actuality. But this song, Till I Die, is actually the penultimate song.

And by this point, by 1971, albums were being produced by the Beach Boys.

They had not been produced by Brian Wilson since Pet Sounds in 1966.

And at this point, the group had a pretty good idea of its own dynamic and its own identity.

And all of them, all six of them, you know, Brian, Mike, Al, Carl, Dennis, and Bruce were making

pretty relevant contributions to their albums.

You know, Dennis Wilson started writing songs in 1968, and then Carl sort of, you know,

who was always the band leader kind of in a live setting
