Summary

“For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it” (Hebrews 12:11 ESV).

Raise your hand if you feel like you check the box well when it comes to being marked by self-discipline.

Me neither.

That’s why I’m glad we’re praying it over our kids this week.

Self-discipline (or lack thereof) will impact every part of their lives, including dating relationships, finances, online accountability, marriage, physical health, and even their occupations.

The author of Hebrews (in perhaps the biggest understatement ever) reminds us that discipline isn’t fun in the moment, but it’s a key step on the pathway to righteousness.

The good news is that self-discipline isn’t just a matter of mustering up enough willpower. Rather, it's a God-given perspective that the greater reward in waiting is better than the immediate temptation we’re facing

Let’s ask God to give our kids the self-discipline to look away, walk away, or find a way to pass by anything that interferes with God’s highest goals in their lives.

Can’t wait to pray with you this week!

Hey guys, it's Cynthia,

0:05.0

I'm glad you're with us as we're praying this week that our kids are marked by self-discipline. Our verse is Hebrews 12. 11, for the moment, all discipline seems painful

rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been

0:31.1

trained by it. And so tuck that away as one of the understatements of the Bible today,

0:35.7

saying that in the moment discipline seems

0:37.5

more painful rather than pleasant. Isn't that the truth? And so I can't make this stuff up.

As I spent this morning kind of praying through this and thinking about self-discipline and what

0:47.3

are some areas we want to pull out of Esther? How do we pray this well for our kids? How do our kids need it?

0:52.3

What are the results when they don't have it? That's what I spent my morning thinking about. And so I went to pick up my preschooler from school

0:58.8

after doing that. And as I got there, instead of the usual carpool with the director of the

1:04.3

daycare, I noticed the teacher was bringing him out individually to the car. Moment of silence for the

1:09.3

times when the teacher has met us at the car,

1:11.6

right, friends? And by the way, if your child has never been brought to the car by the teacher,

1:15.9

you've never gotten that report. You probably have the wrong podcast. So my kiddo was brought out,

1:21.5

and his teacher said that he, uncharacteristically, thankfully, was mean to his friend's day and even

1:27.2

hit a child. And so we had to work through that. And I was thinking to myself, thankfully, was mean to his friend's day and even hit a child. And so we had to

1:29.6

work through that. And I was thinking to myself, oh my goodness, like, of course, that's why we pray

self-discipline. How early in their lives it shows up when they do not have it. So that's real

tales of my house today and self-discipline. I don't think there's something I could be more in need

1:45.4

of praying for my kids today than this. And so we'll talk about it from the context of Esther.

1:51.0

And when I was thinking out of this morning, there's four areas I think we can pray for our kids when we
