Summary

Can you think of any early events that shaped your identity for better or worse?

I remember one formative experience when I was a senior in high school. I heard a girl tell our group of friends that the reason I was admitted to a particular college was because my parents had connections. I’m fairly brilliant (ha!), so it was clearly not true. But it was hurtful just the same.

I look back now and see how many of my decisions were made in response to that one careless comment. I wanted to prove to myself (and others) that I was good enough. It’s a small example with a big reminder. When we search for identity anywhere other than in the Word of God, we will be disappointed.

This week, we’re praying that our kids find their identity in Jesus, not in what others say about them. The world will tell them their worth is based on looks, talents, failures, and accomplishments. God’s Word refutes that by saying they are already his sons and daughters (Romans 8:15), fully known and accepted by God himself (Psalm 139:1–4).

Identity matters because it informs how we live our days. Join me in praying for our kids’ identity. Let’s pray that they will know they are valuable, loved, seen, and good enough—not because of who they are, but because of whose they are.

0:18.0	Glad you're with us as we're praying through the school year for our kids. It's October, which is hard to believe in some ways yet not hard to believe, considering how
0:25.6	long 2020 has been thus far. But if you're with us last month, we started praying for our kids
0:31.3	through the school year and we did it through the life of Joseph. What I was trying to do
0:35.3	and what I'm trying to do this month as well is just contextualize
0:38.6	what we're praying for our kids. It's easier for me to pray these different attributes of our faith
0:43.0	when I can see how it looked in people's lives, the lives of those that God used in really
0:47.6	big ways. And so whenever you can ground things that you're praying in scripture and in God's

0:55.5	demonstrated it in people's lives. I think that's worth doing. And so that's what we're doing
1:00.4	this month. And so as we're praying this month for identity, contentment, God relationships,
1:06.6	and an undivided heart, I couldn't help but think of David. And so that's who we're going to talk about
1:11.4	this month. We're going to talk through the life of David a little bit as we're praying for our
1:15.2	kids. And so this week, it's identity. And identity is a huge one to tackle because we all know how
1:21.8	significant it is to know who we are in God. And for our kids especially, just knowing that God has created them for
1:29.0	purposes and that he has big plans for their lives and they were fearfully and wonderfully made,
1:33.0	there's so much there. But I'm going to interrupt this holy moment, if you will let me,
1:38.2	and talk about something that happened to me in junior high. And it's tangentially related to
