Summary

If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that we don’t know what’s coming our way at any given time.

One year ago this week, the World Health Organization confirmed an additional twenty cases of COVID-19 in the United States, bringing the total number of cases in our country to thirty-five. Even though the number was seemingly small at the time, it was unsettling not knowing what the future held with this virus at hand (and thank goodness we didn’t know).

The one thing we can be certain of this side of heaven is that our lives are going to be uncertain.

Yet even in the middle of uncertainty for Joshua, God reminded him that “every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you” (Joshua 1:3 ESV).

The message to Joshua is the same message for us: with God directing our steps, not even one is unexpected or without purpose to the One who authors them all.

This week, we’re praying for our kids to understand that what’s uncertain to them is anything but unexpected or unplanned to God. Knowing that, we can put our trust in the One who not only knows the future but also writes it.

Join me in praying for our kids to be marked by God’s certainty through all of life’s unknown roads.

Hey guys, welcome to pardon the mess.

0:16.3

It's Cynthia, and this week we are praying that our kids are marked by God's certainty.

0:22.2

And Proverbs 169 is the first in the prayer journal. We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.

0:27.3

I think that's one of those good verses we can memorize because it reminds us that as we make

0:31.9

plans, God's actually directing our steps. And I think that is both kind of a caution to yield to the Lord,

0:40.8

but I think it's also encouragement that he's behind everything we do. He's in it. And a verse

0:45.7

kind of related to that is Ephesians 320. It says now to him who is able to do immeasurably more

0:50.6

than all we ask or imagine according to the power that is at work within us and how

0:56.5

as he's in our steps, as he's directing our paths, he can do more than we could ever imagine.

1:01.7

It reminds me of an adopted grandfather I had that's gone to be at the Lord, but I remember when

1:06.1

I used to ask him, are you going fishing? Are you going to play golf? What's your plan next week? And he'd always say, well, if it's the Lord's will, God willing, I'm going to do this or that. And he always prefaced

1:15.2

his plans with if that was God's plan for him. And I love that because it's so scriptural, obviously.

1:21.1

And so as we pray God's certainty, I think it's important that they know that God is directing their steps and their paths and that they honor that and yes,

1:28.8

we are free will human beings, but that they learn to really consult God to go before God

1:33.9

and humility before making plans in their lives. And I think it's also, as we're praying,

1:40.0

as a reminder, that God is with us. He's for us. He's doing things to make us successful. Nobody wants

1:46.6

us to have more success in kingdom ventures than God, right? It's something he can bless that he wants

1:52.2

for us, and he wants it more than we want, which is kind of hard to believe sometimes. And so when

1:56.3

you think about Esther's life in the whole book of Esther, even when it doesn't mention God's name in the book,

2:02.6

you just see God's fingerprints all over it because there's all these, and I'm using air quotes,
