Summary

Alert: Only 46 days until Christmas!

I know, how is it even possible that Christmas is coming so fast?

Yet at the same time, doesn’t it feel like last Christmas was seven years ago?

As we’re headed into the home stretch of 2020, we have some important opportunities to pray generosity over our kids. This year, more than ever, it seems like an important time to teach generosity in our homes as the needs around us seem so significant.

As we continue studying Nehemiah’s life, we will consider how his fear of the Lord and compassion for others drove a lifestyle of generosity. I can’t think of a better formula for praying generosity over our kids: fear of the Lord + compassion = generosity.

On a much less significant note, on today’s podcast I also share an “overly generous” moment I had years ago, resulting in a bounced check to the church. Bless it.

As we consider how to best live out the next forty-six days leading up to Christmas, let’s flip the script on our kids’ tendency to want more and instead pray they have hearts of generosity toward those around them.

I'm glad that you are with us.

This week we are continuing to pray for our kids through

0:21.6

the school year, and we are praying they are marked by generosity. I think that's a great thing

0:26.2

to pray for our kids as we're headed into Thanksgiving and the holidays and just what does

0:31.0

generosity look like in their lives. And so I'll start by telling you a little story of generosity

0:36.0

for my own life. As you know, if you listen to this podcast, you get some random tidbits from me on occasion.

0:41.9

This is one of them.

0:43.1

But you know the story in the Bible where it talks about the widows might and how she gave

0:46.8

everything that she had and how that was honored because of the sacrifice?

0:51.2

And so when I first got to law school and had my first, like, law job, I was tithing

0:56.5

and I was writing checks. Remember checks back in the day for you younger folks? And I would write a

1:01.1

check to the church, you know, each Sunday and put it an offering plate or whatever. And one time I got

1:04.8

a call from the church and apparently I bounced a check to the church. And so my family has

1:10.6

always made the joke about how I was trying

1:12.4

to outdo the widow and the widows might. She gave all that she had. I gave more than I had.

1:17.7

So there you go. That's my random story about generosity. Apparently I was too generous at some

1:21.8

point early on. But we are talking generosity today. And we're going to talk about it like you

1:27.2

know through the context of Nehemiah.

1:29.5

And we started it off last week talking about kind of Nehemiah's purpose and rebuilding the wall
