Hey, let's talk shotgun gauges for just a minute.

Now, you probably know there are a number of different gauges out there for shotguns.

There's 12 gauge, 16 gauge, 20 gauge, 28 gauge, and 410, which technically is not a gauge, but actually

is a bore.

I'll explain why it's not a gauge and what it means to have a 20 gauge or a 12 gauge and how they came up with that in just a minute.

And also, we'll talk about which one works best for you. In 30 seconds we're

Well, if you know, this is one of those great esoteric questions.

All right, the diameter of the barrel, take a 12 gauge for instance. The diameter of a barrel, if you made a lead ball that is that diameter, it would fit into that barrel. It would take 12

balls, spherical balls, of that size,

to weigh a pound.

20-gauge, smaller balls, smaller hole, it would take 20 lead balls of that diameter to weigh

a pound.

28 gates, same thing.

So that's, I don't know where it comes from. It's probably the English but anyway

that's what it is so somebody says well how they come up with that now you know

maybe it's worth a bar bet somewhere along the way. I don't know. So 12 gauge, 16 gauge, 20 gauge, 28

gates and 410. Ah, but 410. Surely it's not 410 balls. No. For whatever reason, the 410 is actually 0.420 diameter barrel. It's not a true

gauge, it's actually a bore. And sometimes you'll hear people talk about the 410 bore. And if you really want to be pedantic about it,
