Hi, this is Tom Gresham, host of gun talk. I have some thoughts. The story is still fresh,

the attempted assassination of U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. There's a lot of talk about

how we talk. There are people saying, well, it's the talk radio.

It's the way we talk to each other.

It's, well, it's the atmosphere, the rhetoric.

We hear the word rhetoric all the time now.

The rhetoric is ramped up.

It's O'Reilly and Beck and talk radio and how they incite people. And just

the fact that we talk this way makes people go try to commit murder. I've been thinking about

this. And it's hard for me to get here, but I've come to a conclusion that they're right.

The truth of it is, free speech is out of control.

We have entirely too much free speech in this country.

The whole First Amendment, after all, it was written more than 200 years ago.

That makes it hard to understand, and it makes it largely irrelevant.

They never envisioned the Internet or radio or television or mass communications back then.

The simple truth is that the way we talk, our free speech endangers us all.

So my proposal is this.

And I know this is going to upset some people, but I think we've come to this.

It's perfectly okay for you to talk to each other one-on-one, or even one person talking to two.

But I think what we're going to have to do is anytime you want to speak to more than two people,

anytime there's a news broadcast, a radio tele or radio broadcast, anytime you want to post

something on a forum or a bulletin board online, I think we're going to have to require
