Okay, let me talk for just a couple of minutes about Magnum Rifle cartridges.

Do you need them?

Well, probably not.

If you are a hunter, deer hunter, antelope, whatever, you don't probably need a magnum.

Yes, I have magnums. I like magnums. I've been shooting a 7mm-millimeter, 7mm remit to magnum for many, many years since I was a teenager. Love it. Great cartridge. Shot 300 magnums. Killed a lot of stuff with them. 375 H&H magnums, 416 magnums. Love them all. They're great. I have them. But they're really not necessary.

And unfortunately, for a lot of people, they are detrimental.

A lot of people can't shoot them well because of the excess noise and the extra recoil.

So if they're not necessary, what do you need?

Well, you need a standard cartridge.

How about a 308, a 30-0.30-0. A 270, often overlooked and neglected these days. A 270 still may be the best deer hunting cartridge ever created. If you don't want to go 270, how about a 7mm 08? Delightful little short cartridge.

Excellent on game, up to and including elk, out to 350 yards and beyond.

Short rifles, not a lot of recoil, great gun.

And frankly, if you're going to shoot nothing but a whitetail deer,

and some people are going to have a problem with this, that's okay.

A 243.

Yes, I have said it.

There it is.

The 243 is a great deer cartridge.
