Summary

We record this episode the day after a tragic fire at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris has destroyed the spire, roof, and interior of one of the most important and magnificent religious sites in the world. Bishop Barron shares his close ties to Notre Dame, including his time as tour guide, and explains why these Gothic churches are so significant.

A listener asks about Robert Sokolowski and which of his books to read.

Welcome back to the Word on Fire Show. I am the host, my name is Brandon Vott. I'm the

0:11.1

content director here at Word on Fire Catholic Ministries. Joining us from his residence

0:16.1

in Los Angeles is his Eminence Bishop Robert Barron, Bishop Barron. Good morning.

0:20.9

Hey Brandon, good morning to you. Always good to talk to you and see you.

0:24.0

You as well. Now you're in Los Angeles because last night you participated in the great

0:28.2

chrysum mass. What was that like? It was good. You know, it's probably the most

0:32.0

crowded this cathedral ever gets during the year. It was, I think the capacity here is about

0:36.9

3,000 and it was beyond capacity. So I'd say 3,500 people were here last night.

0:41.5

And you know, the chrysum mass is a wonderful celebration because we the whole diocese comes

0:45.1

together. People come to see the the oils, you know, of catechumins and the oils of the sick and then

0:50.9

the chrysum oil blessed and then the people come and literally take them home then to their

0:55.2

parishes. So it's a beautiful, I always love it, expression of the unity of of an arts diocese

1:00.8

and a diocese this size, the largest in the US. It's impressive to see that display.

1:07.0

Well, we're recording this on a very somber time, I think, in the history of Western civilization.

1:13.2

This is April 16th, Tuesday of Holy Week. Just yesterday, Monday of Holy Week,

1:18.6

the world was shocked to see images of the great cathedral of Notre Dame burning.

1:26.0

You know, it reminded me of the images of the World Trade Centers where you just see these

1:30.4

this magnificent building on fire. But then that moment when the World Trade Center collapsed

1:34.7

was just like when there's great spire of the Notre Dame cathedral, it collapsed, the roof caved in.

1:40.6

It's still a little too early to understand the significance of the damage or even what caused it.

1:45.6

But we wanted to devote this episode to this building and its significance both religiously and

1:51.9

historically. So I guess first of all, Bishop, where were you when you first heard about this?
