Summary

I did promise you an episode on Matilda of Tuscany, and here it is. But, it is not mine. This episode is from the fantastic podcast "A History of Italy" by Mike Corradi. I cam across it when I was researching the Matilda Episode and I realised in horror, that if I wee to create a Matilda Episode, it would be very much like this one, only worse. So I asked Mike whether I could borrow his work. Listening to Mike will give you a great though different perspective of the same events and I cget teh chance to lounge about the house, watch Netflix and eat crisps..... If you enjoy Mike's work, why don't you subscribe to his podcast. His website is here: https://ahistoryofitaly.com/podcast/

Hello and welcome to a special bonus episode of the history of the Germans.

Well, it's not actually the history of the Germans, but the history of Italy, a podcast

When I did my research and thought about how to structure and organize the story of Matilda,

0:27.6

I noticed that it had already been done by Mike.

0:31.6

Listening to him, I realized I would not have done it any different.

0:35.6

So, I went for the lazy option and asked him whether I could borrow his work.

0:45.1

Not only do I get more time to lounge about the house eating crisps, you get the opportunity to hear

0:50.7

the story of Matilda from a different perspective. And as you listen, you will notice that Mike's take on events occasionally differs from mine.

0:59.3

Now that is most likely down to a straight-out mistake on my part, or maybe down to the

1:04.5

discrepancy in the sources, all of which are biased. Welcome to the Middle Ages.

1:10.6

As for the history of the Germans podcast, normal schedule continues and a regular episode

1:14.9

should drop on Thursday. And in the meantime, enjoy Mike's take on one of the greatest

1:20.3

female figures in medieval European history.

1:24.7

Hello everyone and welcome to a history of Italy.

1:29.2

...Matilda of Tuscany, the Iron Countess of Canossa.

1:56.0

Let's imagine that you wish to visit Italy, northern Italy precisely. Let's also imagine that you're courageous, or crazy enough, to want to rent a car and brave the jungle that is the Italian motorway.

2:06.9

You're driving from Milan southeast towards Bologna because, let's face it, you want to get away from Milan as quickly as you can.

2:15.5

As you make your way down, sticking to the right hand lane in

2:20.0

terror, at a certain point, after going past Parma, you see a sign for a motorway exit,

2:26.6

Terre di Canossa, the lands of Canossa. You go past the exit and then you see a very impressive Santiago Calatrava bridge over the motorway
