Summary

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:16–18)

We tend to tie gratitude to our situation. We feel grateful if life is good or we feel happy. We feel grateful when God answers our prayers the way we want.

But God’s challenge to us is to rejoice always, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances! And even when we don’t feel thankful for our circumstances, we can be thankful for this: God loves us enough to heal us (like he healed the lepers), God loves us enough to provide for us, protect us, and guide us. And most importantly God loves us enough to send his only Son, Jesus, to die on the cross and forgive us our sins.

On our kids’ journey of faith, it’s important that they learn to love God by expressing their gratitude to him. This week, let’s pray that our kids always have a grateful heart, even when it’s hard. Let’s pray that they would recognize God’s blessing in their lives and actively praise him for them.

Jesus, thank you for showering us with blessings and for changing our lives by going to the cross! May ____________ always remember that you are good. May they bow before you in reverence and awe knowing that you are worthy of praise and may they acknowledge the way you work in their life, always remembering to have a posture of gratitude towards you. Amen.

For the love of Hashburn Custral, I love Thanksgiving so much.

And if you're listening to this today, I am actually in

0:23.4

Auburn on this day. This is airing. So you know I'm happy about that. And then I cruise through

0:27.9

Atlanta to see a couple people. And then I cruise to the lake where my parents live and get to

0:34.6

see all my siblings. And so Thanksgiving just means so much to me.

0:37.7

And it means family. And I'm deeply, deeply grateful. And I know I've whined about this before,

0:42.6

but I have lived away from family for so many years that when I get to be with them, my heart

0:46.6

just like explodes. And so I'm excited that this episode is all about gratitude. I'm going to

0:52.6

give you three disclaimers before you listen.

0:55.2

So one, I am legitimately like Pollyanna. One time I wrote an article for Focus on the Family,

1:01.4

and the editor said, this is too, Pollyanna. And so, you know, I get that. But I do have positivity,

1:07.0

like in my top five strengths. I'm getting a little crankier as the years go by, but I come at

1:12.8

live with a positive outlook for the most part. And so I may annoy you in this conversation because I'm

1:18.2

like, just be grateful for everything. And you're like, you know what? We can't pay her bills. You know what?

1:22.4

My mom is dying. You know what? My kids aren't talking to me. And so I want you to just come in and just let's put

1:27.9

our guards down and just know that Thanksgiving and gratitude and a grateful heart is something for

1:32.6

all of us. Those of us that lean towards positivity and a little bit oblivious and those of us that are

1:38.0

realists or may even be a little negative. So let's enter in this chat together and then we're going to

1:42.7

pray. But I also want to give another disclaimer that circumstances can be so hard. I mentioned it just a second ago,

1:48.1

but I want to say, even when we say rejoice in all things, that you're going, that is hard. And I

1:53.0

recognize that. There's been many seasons in my life that I've made myself, thank God, for
