Welcome back to Mama Mystery. I am your host, Kelly, and today we are talking about the Karen

0:13.1

Reed case. This is day four, I believe. Before we begin, I think it would be helpful to clearly outline

0:19.1

exactly what Karen Reed is being charged

0:21.1

with and what potential outcomes could look like. So Karen is being charged with three things. The first

0:26.2

one is second degree murder. This means she's accused of intentionally killing John O'Keefe

0:30.6

without premeditation. If convicted, she could face life in prison. Number two, she's charged

0:36.3

with manslaughter while operating under the

0:38.1

influence. It's also abbreviated as OUI manslaughter. This charge alleges that she caused

0:44.2

John O'Keefe's death by driving under the influence of alcohol. Number three, she's charged with

0:48.9

leaving the scene of a collision causing death. This implies that she left the accident scene

0:53.4

without stopping to call for help or

0:55.3

assistance. So could the jury consider lesser charges? Yes, they can. If the jury isn't convinced

1:01.5

beyond a reasonable doubt that she is guilty of the more serious charges, then they have the option

1:07.0

to consider lesser offenses. So they could consider involuntary manslaughter, and this would

1:11.7

suggest that she caused John O'Keefe's death through reckless or negligent actions without intending to

1:17.5

kill him. They could also find her guilty of motor vehicle homicide instead, and this charge applies

1:22.4

if someone causes a death while operating a vehicle negligently or recklessly. Now, these lesser charges carry lighter sentences, of course, but still represent serious

1:31.3

felonies.

1:32.3

For second-degree murder, it carries a possible sentence of life in prison with eligibility for

1:36.3

parole after 15 years.

1:38.3

For OUI manslaughter, the possible sentence is a minimum mandatory sentence of five years,

1:43.3

with a maximum sentence of up to 20 years.
