Summary

We have another bonus episode in store for you today! We speak with Dr. Jim Sanderson, a conservationist and Program Manager of Wild Cat Conservation at the Global Wildlife Conservation. We wanted to speak with him about the Andean Cat, because he is one of the very few people to ever see one in nature. While we did learn some cool things about the cat, we also learned a lot about a new field - conservationism.

It was such an honor to get the chance to speak with Dr. Sanderson. This episode is a bit longer than usual, but we thought the whole interview was so interesting, we didn't know what to cut.

We hope you enjoy it, and are as inspired by Dr. Sanderson's work as we are!

We should be back to our normal format after this. We look forward to thanking our newest Patreon sponsor on that episode.

Hi everyone, it's Ali. I'm really excited to share with you an interview that we did last week with Dr. Jim Sanderson. Dr. Sanderson is a conservationist, and he is one of the few people to ever see the Andean cat in person. We were really excited to talk to him about the Andean cat, but then it turned out into a really fascinating discussion about conservationism in general,

which is different from the study of animals, but also really, really important.

So this is a little bit longer than usual, but we wanted to share with you the whole thing

just to get a sense of this area of study and to learn a little bit of cool stuff about the

Andean cat. Thanks again to Dr.

0:38.9

Sanderson for his time. Enjoy the episode, guys.

0:46.1

Hello? Well, thank you so much for speaking with us. I thought Grady could sort of take

0:50.4

the lead here because he's learning about the Andean cat for an extra credit school

0:56.6

project, but we also have a podcast that we do called Cool Facts About Animals, where we

1:01.6

teach kids from around the world about different animals, and we thought that this would also

1:05.6

be a great opportunity to put your research in that podcast.

1:09.7

Yeah, only you probably shouldn't use the word research because we do mostly conservation.

1:15.5

Conservation is really a multidisciplinary program that requires a person to know languages,

1:24.3

social sciences, because we deal with people.

1:29.3

And ecology, which is the study of wildlife

1:32.6

in their environment that includes people.

1:35.8

Whereas a person can do research just by going to Mongolia

1:41.1

and without speaking Mongolian, study the cat and not do any conservation and leave.

1:48.0

And that's not what we do.

1:50.0

Okay.

1:51.0

So Grady, do you want to get started with your questions?

1:53.0

How did you become interested in animals?
