Summary

In part five of their “Momming During Coronavirus” bonus series, Shanna and Laura interview neonatologists Dr. Diana Montoya-Williams and Dr. Joanna Parga-Belinkie about how COVID-19 is affecting newborn babies and pregnant women. The doctors answer all of Laura and Shanna’s burning questions about the novel coronavirus, including whether newborns are at risk for contracting the disease, what pregnant mothers can expect when they go into labor during this time, whether moms-to-be should consider non-hospital births, if trying to conceive is advised at this time and more. Dr. Diana and Dr. Joanna host the podcast Baby Doctor Mamas, a show for new parents by physician-mothers specializing in newborn medicine. They can be found at babydoctormamas.com.

Hi, everyone. Welcome to Big Fat Positive. We have another very special coronavirus pandemic special, our favorite kind of special for you today. And we're actually really excited because we have special guests, Joanna and Diana from the podcast Baby Doctor Mamas, here to answer our burning

0:22.7

questions about what's going on with this whole pandemic thing, especially regarding being

0:29.5

pregnant and newborn babies and all that stuff. Joanna and Diana are podcasters, but they are

0:35.3

neonatologists, and they have an amazing podcast

0:38.6

that you should definitely listen to, and we'll make sure to tell you exactly where to find that

0:43.0

throughout this episode. But they are actual scientists, as opposed to Sean and I, who just

0:47.4

read a lot of news and talk about things. And we're so happy to have them here. Hi, Joanna and Diana. Hi. Thank you so much for having us.

0:58.2

It's such a pleasure to be here. So we want to just jump right in because we know there's just so

1:02.3

many questions that people have and we know that your time is precious and limited right now.

1:07.6

So I just want to just start with. Can you tell us a little bit about yourselves and like your areas of expertise?

1:13.6

Like can you, maybe people don't even know what a neonatologist is. Yeah, I can start. This is Joanna. I am a neonatologist. I am, I do mostly clinical neonatology. So I spend a lot of time in the hospital because neonatologists work in the neonatal

1:29.7

intensive care unit. So we take care of babies who are sick basically from the time of birth.

1:36.3

Sometimes we get transfers in from other hospitals of babies who are in their first few weeks of life.

1:41.9

And so we take care of those babies and manage them while they're in the

1:45.9

NICU. And then we are trained as pediatricians first. Some neonatologists do clinic to follow up on

1:53.9

their babies after NICU discharge, but I just work in the hospital. And this is Diana. I am also a neonatologist, so I also work in

2:03.0

neonatal intensive care unit, and actually the same one as Joanna. But I am also a health

2:08.4

equity scientist and do a lot of research on health disparities among racial ethnic minority women

2:14.5

and immigrant women. So I wear a couple different hats in my role as

2:18.5

both a doctor and a scientist. Diana is much more the scientist between the two of us.

2:25.1

Great. All right. So one of our first questions, just broadly, what do we know about pregnant women

2:31.7

and the risk for COVID-19 right now? So one of the things that
