Welcome to Monster Talk, the science show about monsters. I'm Blake Smith.

Occasionally, I get the opportunity to talk to people who make stuff that fits into the themes of this show.

Recently, I have the opportunity to play the board game Horrified, both the original edition,

which is based on the Universal Studio movie monsters, and the new edition, which is based on American cryptids and folklore monsters.

I love both of the games, and I figured if you're a gamer, and you listen to this show, you'd probably like this too.

But I'm also interested in game design, and I did a little footwork, and managed to actually get in touch with the designer Mike Mulvahill.

Even if you don't know Mike by name, chances are you've heard of his work with systems like Shadow Run, Hero Clicks, and Mage Knight.

This is a good long chat, so I'll shut up with the introduction, except to add that you can find links in the show notes to the games,

and some of the ideas from this discussion.

Well, today we're talking with Mike Mulvahill, and Mike is a seasoned game designer who's been working in the field for three decades.

His credits include Work on Shadow Run, Hero Clicks, Mage Knight, and of course the game we're talking about today, Horrified, American Monsters Edition.
