Summary

Another special bonus episode from the “Make Me Care About” podcast from the Gates Foundation with our own Jen Hatmaker talking with another amazing expert about things we may not know about and if we did–we would definitely care! When it goes well, giving birth can be a wonderful experience, but when it goes wrong, it can be deadly for mother and child alike. Too often, where you live, your access to quality care, and in some places–the color of your skin–determines whether or not you live or die during birth. In this episode, we have the privilege of hearing from journalist, activist, and mom Elaine Welteroth.  Join Jen and Elaine as they discuss: How many women die every year during childbirth and pregnancy  The factors and risks contributing to mortality rates Why these deaths are preventable  The increased likelihood of death for Black mothers Why the United States has the highest number of maternal deaths among high income countries Gates Foundation & Guest Links Make Me Care About Podcast Series Gates Foundation  Elaine Welteroth’s website   Resources for this Episode Gender equality strategy Maternal, infant, and child health    Connect with Jen! Hello, my dear for the love podcast community. You guys were popping in at a special time

0:09.4

this week to let you in on a very cool project. I've been a part of this year and I definitely

0:15.3

want you to be a part of it too. You may have heard of a little organization called The

0:19.8

Gates Foundation. It's literally out there doing hugely important work having a deep

0:26.5

and profound impact on the world. And they're excited to share stories about some of those world

0:31.8

changing initiatives and most importantly the innovators behind them. And I was honored when they

0:38.0

asked me to service the host for a brand new podcast series they are calling Make Me Care About.

0:45.4

You guys, they rounded up the most interesting people to actually make us care about all kinds of

0:50.7

stuff we might have never thought of like for example poop. Okay, poop. We have a whole poop show.

0:56.5

I sit down and talk to an expert about why the thing we're talking about matters. Probably more

1:01.0

than we even realize it does. Like in this case, how sanitation systems work and why they are in

1:06.3

danger of being outdated, which could wreak so much havoc on our public health. And then the

1:10.6

solutions they're working on to radically change the configurations of our indoor plumbing solutions

1:15.8

over the next few decades. I promise you this is a fascinating conversation. And poop is just one.

1:22.6

Like that's not the only thing we're asking you to care about. We're getting the skinning on stuff

1:27.1

like syringes and iodized salt and college digital money. You guys, there's so much more. And I

1:35.1

can't even begin to tell you how much I learned by being a part of these conversations. It was fun

1:40.8

and it was fascinating. And of course, I knew I had to share these episodes with our community here.

1:47.0

So we're going to be airing several of these over the coming few weeks as a little extra bonus.

1:53.2

In addition to our regularly scheduled episodes to pop in your ears at the end of the week.

1:58.6

I know you're going to find these conversations as interesting and as illuminating as I did. And I

2:04.1

hope they inspire you to be more curious and care about something new that maybe wasn't on your radar
