Summary

This week, we turn to Esther Perel, psychotherapist and host of the hit podcast Where Should We Begin?, to help put our fears and emotions around coronavirus in context. She also gives us useful strategies for living in lockdown. There are insights in this episode that we think will help listeners in any circumstance, so we've decided to drop it early.

We hope you enjoy the episode, and would love to hear your thoughts. Email us at [email protected] or tweet us at @FTCultureCall. We're also still collecting your cultural recommendations under quarantine: what are you watching, reading and doing at home? Fill out our short form at ft.com/culturecallout, or record a short voice note on your phone and email it to us. We'll use a selection in upcoming episodes.

Hi, Gris. Hey, Lila. How's it going? Good. We're back again so very soon. It's been just a week

0:16.9

since we published Samin Nesrat. Everyone seems to have been loving that episode, which is great.

0:21.4

Yeah, totally. And she's got me cooking like way more than I even really have time for. The products

0:26.6

are variable. I would call them variable. Well, it's a learning curve. I mean, I'm pretty near the

0:32.3

beginning of that curve, but, you know, we're all on it now. We're all on it. So let's talk about why we're back in everybody's feed so soon.

0:41.2

Yeah, so normally we wouldn't have another episode until next week.

0:44.2

Yeah, so when the lockdown began, we were talking with our producer Lena,

0:48.6

and we were like thinking about all the ways that our priorities had now changed for the podcast

0:52.7

and what we were going to do

0:55.6

for new episodes. And we were thinking, like, okay, if we were listeners, who would we want to hear?

1:01.1

You know, like, who would give us guidance through this time? Yeah. What would be helpful?

1:06.1

And so the first person we thought of was Esther Perel. I mean, you spoke to Esther Perel.

1:11.3

End of last year, wasn't it, that we published that episode. Yeah. I mean, that was one of our most listened to, most popular episodes. Yeah, people loved it. And I think the reason people loved it is, well, it's about how societies, well, how our relationships are changing. Yeah. alongside like how society's changing, you know, both in the workplace and the family and

1:31.4

romantic relationships.

1:33.1

So it's kind of a mix of this quite sharp, big picture analysis.

1:37.8

Sociological, yeah.

1:39.1

Yeah, yeah, very, like very kind of macro.

1:41.4

But then also just very good, solid, practical advice. And it was a good mixture

1:45.6

of those two things. Yeah, definitely. And so we thought, okay, well, let's just see if Esther has

1:51.0

a little bit of time for us. And so we wrote to her and she fit in 30 minutes. And it's funny,

1:56.4

like, in preparation for this, I was looking in like, what is Esther doing right now? Like, what is a famous therapist do in a time of crisis? And she's super busy. She's like still putting out her podcast, where shall we begin, which records therapy sessions with couples. She's been doing that for like years. But now she's doing it remotely with couples struggling under lockdown. And there's

2:18.0

something very calming about hearing like a stressed out couple stuck together in a home start to
