I'm your host Ken Wise, and I'm doing this bonus episode because one of

Texas's newest historic sites is going to open in a couple of weeks. I'm

recording and releasing this episode on November 1st, 2021.

Four days away, by the way, from the sixth anniversary of Wise About Texas, and one of the most important and interesting of

why is about Texas and one of the most important and interesting

historic sites in Texas has a great new addition coming in a couple of weeks.

San Felipe was the or San Felipe Day Austin couple of

San Felipe de Austin as it was known in the 1830s was the capital of Stephen

F Austin's colony in Mexican, Texas.

Austin had his land office there at San Felipe,

so all of the old 300 land grants and all the business that was conducted was conducted in San Felipe.

The site was preserved by the state in a small way, a very small piece of the site was preserved in the early 20th century.

But in 2018, the Texas Historic Commission, after having acquired some additional land

opened a wonderful visitor center there at San Felipe and if you listen to this

podcast in early 2020 I went around to all or many excuse me not all many of the historic

sites associated with the Texas Revolution in San Felipe was one of those sites

and I interviewed Brian McCauley, the site director, who works with the Texas Historic Commission,

and we talked about the importance of San Felipe and the community.

But they've made an addition to the site that's going to open on November 13th, 2021, and it's called Via
