Summary

“He was always shot through with gratitude.” So says Russell Moore of pastor, theologian, and author Tim Keller, who died on Friday, May 19, 2023. Husband to Kathy and father of three, Keller was the founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City and the cofounder of Redeemer City to City. Moore believes Keller to be the most significant American evangelist since Billy Graham, a designation he explains throughout the episode. “The death of @timkellernyc is an incalculable loss to the church, the world, to those of us who loved him, those of us he helped in our darkest hours,” Moore tweeted on Friday. “This is gain for Tim, now in the presence of Christ. He need no longer explain the reason for God, just to enjoy him forever.” On this special episode of The Russell Moore Show, Moore shares stories of spending time with Keller, especially highlighting Keller’s remarkable approach to describing the gospel in conversations with non-Christians. He recalls the way Keller responded with profound empathy when attacked by critics. And Moore shares some of the wisdom Keller imparted to him that helped Moore make significant life decisions. This episode features portions from conversations Moore had with Keller over the years. Listeners will hear Keller speak on forgiveness, the Resurrection, and grieving the deaths of loved ones. And they’ll hear the many and beautiful reasons why Moore will miss his dear friend. This is a special episode of the Russell Moore show today reflecting on the death this week of my friend Tim Keller, who I believe to be the most significant American evangelist since Billy Graham. And I say evangelist specifically and I'll explain a little bit more of what I mean by that in a few minutes.

We're going to have some segments of conversations with Tim over the past couple of years dealing with

0:45.3

questions of forgiveness. How do I forgive someone who has hurt me? How do I

find forgiveness for myself?

0:52.6

As well as a conversation about resurrection.

0:56.4

How can one face death and how can one face the death of people that one loves?

1:02.0

Very, very relevant questions today.

1:05.0

Still kind of raw the thought of losing Tim Keller.

1:10.0

I told someone today I've spent much of the past few days telling stories with other people who likewise have

1:18.8

had the same kinds of stories or similar stories with Tim of a life that is well lived and a life whose legacy

1:27.2

will continue on.

1:28.6

A few things though, before we actually get to the conversations with Tim.

I've been thinking about over the past several days

1:38.0

as to unique aspects of Tim Keller that I think about maybe first when I think about him.

1:47.0

And the first one is what I mentioned a few minutes ago and that's Evangelism.

1:52.0

And I say that because I had so many moments with Tim with unbelievers. We would be in

2:02.0

many situations where we were talking together with atheists or

2:06.5

agnostics or people of other world religions. Some of them kind of curious about Christianity. There was one atheist I

2:15.7

remember saying to Tim and to me I feel as though I'm colorblind and and you all can see color and so it's like you can see a whole spectrum that I can't

2:28.0

see when it comes to faith.

2:31.0

But some of them who were ridiculing and hostile of Christianity as well and I

2:37.0

could watch Tim with people all along that spectrum and I remember one night saying to my wife,
