Ligella! Welcome, welcome, listeners to another bonus episode of the extra inch. My name is Wendy, and I'm joined once again by Alex Benham, who is a public health researcher and PhD

candidates at Oxford University. Alex, welcome back. How are you coping with lockdown life?

I'm doing okay, Chris, as well as I think we can kind of do in these circumstances. I'm trying

to do normal things, trying to do some gardening, writing, running. It just feels very odd to try and

lead a normal life in such deeply abnormal times. But yeah, I think I'm coping as well as one can

in the circumstances. Glad to hear it. So we spoke a while ago, Alex, about project really starts

about football coming back amidst this, using your expertise and knowledge of

previous pandemics. And I think we're both quite proud of how the podcast came out. We certainly

got some nice feedback. We also got masses of questions, some of which we're going to try and tackle

in this podcast. I would say if you've not listened to that first podcast we did with Alex,

go back and listen to that

first. That is going to be really important because the questions are going to be follow-ups

on that. And you'll want to know what Alex spoke about in relation to, well, all the previous

pandemic we discussed. So the Spanish flu, the bubolic plague and the government responses in

Britain in particular to those.

Yeah, so let's start off, Alex, by talking about where we are now, because things have changed

a little bit since we spoke. The public health messaging has moved on, for example. It's changed

from stay at home to stay alert. Plus, we've had latterly, this side show of Dominic Cummings' trip up north,

breaching of the lockdown conditions.

I'm interested from you as a public health expert,

someone who understands the impact that has on messaging.
