What is the spinal cord? Let's just start at the top. Is it just the series of bones that runs

0:04.9

on your back, right? Well, that's the spinal column. So the spinal cord itself is like a bundle of

0:10.3

nerves. So it's a continuation of the brain. So it's about 50 centimetremonies long, and it runs from

0:15.5

the base of your brain, and all the way down to about your waist level. Yeah, right. And so it's got a probably approximately 100 million neurons in it.

0:24.2

And it's kind of like an elevator.

0:26.5

So it takes signals from the brain, which is kind of like a penthouse,

0:30.2

all the way down to the basement.

0:31.9

But it can drop things off on the way down.

0:34.1

So it has levels all the way down.

0:35.8

So we have a level called the cervical

0:38.6

region and there's kind of seven floors to that. And then we have a thoracic, which is your midback,

0:44.7

and there's about 12. There's 12 levels for that. And then we go into a lumbar level and there's

0:49.5

five levels for that. And this is all sort of building through part of our central nervous

0:53.8

system, right? That's right. And so you've sort of building through part of our central nervous system,

0:59.5

right? That's right. And so you've got sensations coming out from the outside body, like touch,

1:03.5

pain, temperature that goes into the cord and up to the brain. And then you have signals from your brain down to your body to move your body. Right. Do you have favourite organs or most, like a

1:09.6

ranking of the most important parts of the human body?

1:12.1

And if you do, where does this sit?

1:14.8

Oh, that's a good question.

1:16.0

I mean, if you look at, so you look at all the different, there's around about 12 or so

1:19.4

organ systems of the body, the nervous system is included there.

1:23.2

And we often recognise the nervous system as the master regulator of the whole body.
