In this week's Bonus Book Update podcast, I tell you all about the route I chose to publish Babies Are Not Pizzas. These days, book publishing has been democratized, and anyone can self-publish a book outside of the traditional system.

Hi everyone in this special bonus episode of the evidence-based birth podcast I'm going to talk about which publishing route I chose and why.

So I started thinking about writing a book almost three years ago when I quit my job as an assistant

professor at a university.

At that time I wasn't sure what the book would be about.

All I knew is that now I had more time in my life,

I was excited to write a book.

I was at a conference that summer three years ago

for people who run websites, such as myself.

And Dan, my husband and I had gone to that conference together.

It was in Boise, Idaho.

And we got the chance to see a famous entrepreneur speak.

His name is Seth Godin. Some of you may have heard of him.

And somebody asked him a question about publishing a book and which route was the route to take,

whether self-publishing or using a traditional publisher.

I don't remember exactly what he said,

but I remember being struck by some of the comments he made

about traditional publishing versus self-publishing.

And I hope I don't offend anyone out there if anybody works for a publisher.

I don't have anything against, you know, what publishers do.

It just became increasingly clear that using a traditional publisher might not be in my best interests as the author.

The field of traditional publishing has really been upended by self-publishing.

And you can almost say in a way that the field has been democratized.
