Hello, I'm John Meggs. Currently honored to be the president of the American Academy of Family

Physicians. Tell us, Dr. Miggs, what is your background and what led you to

leadership? Well, I'm a small town boy from here in central Alabama. I actually practice

less than a half a mile from where I graduated from high school. I was in solo private practice

for 31 years here in my hometown.

And now for the last four years, I have been employed by the hospital here.

Another physician and I merged our practices, and now there's the two of us there in a new clinic.

As far as what led me into leadership, I guess I started

working with my state chapter and as it became more involved there, then became involved with

the Congress of Delegates there for the American Academy and have always had a interest in

argumentary procedures. So I started my time on the board there with the American Academy as

vice speaker and then speaker and then last year ran for President-elect.

As a physician, as a family physician, you know, you work with patients all the time,

and you try to make a difference with your patients one-on-one. I guess hopefully, and maybe in a

position like this, you can make a difference for a lot of folks if you can get something accomplished. Yeah. What is it like to be

president of the American Academy of Family Physicians? Busy. You know, there's always meetings to go to.

I guess the thing I like about it the least is the fact that I'm out of the office so much.

And so my patients are always complaining that I can't ever see you.
