This is Join the Journey with your host, Emma Daughter.

Thanks for joining. We're about to start the Book of Joshua, but before we do, I think it would

0:21.5

be helpful if we did a really quick overview of the book of Deuteronomy. You may have noticed

0:26.6

that our reading plan this year skips it. That's because we are only reading the historical

0:31.5

books of the Old Testament, or said differently, the books that move the story forward.

0:36.2

Deuteronomy, it's a little pause in between numbers and

0:39.0

Joshua. It's Moses's final words to Joshua and the Israelites as they're about to start moving

0:43.7

into their new home. And at its core, the book is a review. Moses is reminding the new generation

0:50.0

of Israelites of where their family has been, what they've committed to, and where they're

0:54.3

headed. In the Watermark Institute, we learned that Deuteronomy is organized into three

0:59.2

sermons of Moses, historical, legal, and prophetical. Again, that's where they've been, what they've

1:05.3

committed to, and where they're headed. So who wrote Deuteronomy? Well, it's the three sermons of Moses, and verse one says, or reads,

1:13.8

these are the words which Moses spoke. So most likely the author's Moses, however, Joshua or

1:19.3

someone else may have written the last chapter. And what's the purpose of Moses's message?

1:25.1

An article from God Questions puts it like this. A new generation of Israelites

1:29.8

was about to enter the promised land. This multitude, or this people, had not experienced the

1:35.2

miracle at the Red Sea or heard the law given at Sinai, and they were about to enter a new land

1:40.4

with many dangers and temptations. The book of Deuteronomy was given to remind them of God's

1:45.6

law and God's power. Again, remember, this generation of Israelites, they'd grown up wandering in

1:52.0

the wilderness. They hadn't seen all the miracles God had done when he freed the Israelites from slavery.
