It can be a sign that you're doing something right if your character has

this sense of agency and they're kind of telling you, no, this is not what I would do,

you know.

So I think that's why it's important to have a flexible outline, meaning that if your character starts to do different things and you had planned, then just do them out and go back to your outline and adjust the way forward.

Yeah, so you're still writing toward an end point,

but it can be whatever you want.
