On today’s podcast I had professional ping pong player Wally Green on! Wally has a really crazy story of growing up in the projects and then being shipped off to Germany where he learned and developed his ping pong skills and eventually became a pro. Along that journey, he also signed a deal with Rockstar Games to make a ping pong game, the first ever ping pong game! It was really cool to hear about how that was developed and all the work he put in. He also goes through his journey as a professional ping pong player and what it was like competing against the Chinese, as well as all the little things he had to do to create the wins for himself. We also go through his business. He has opened up ping pong bars, which are really exciting. Overall, his story and energy really inspired me and it was a great interview, so make sure you stay to the end!

Wally Green grew up in the projects with a heavy presence of domestic violence. He was joining gangs at a young age as a result. Wally Green said that he even hated ping pong at the time and used to make fun of other players. He started playing ping pong after an angry outburst playing pool. He approached a group playing ping pong and played with them, and they suggested he join a ping pong club. Wally said that he had trouble getting people to play with him. Then someone approached him about being partners and even paid him each time they played!

The partners became close and he was invited to his partners home. He hung out with his family and had a great time. Soon after, his partner wanted to help him have a better life, and offered him a chance to learn and play ping pong in Germany.

After training in Germany, he came back to America and began winning tournaments. He learned to love the sport. After playing a match in China Town in Manhattan, NY, he was approached by Rockstar Games to help develop a ping pong game. The game got a lot of publicity because it was the first game of it’s kind. Wally Green says that doing motion capture was insanely difficult. After the video game was developed, Wally asked if Rockstar Games would sponsor him, and they said yes! Wally got about $30K every year from them, so he was very smart with his money to make it last. By doing that, Wally Green was able to play on the US team in every major country in the world!

That's so funny. And I think it's a reminder too, because I get a lot of people who, whatever

0:09.9

their profession is, right? Like people are like, how should I get on social media?

0:13.2

Like what should I do? And I'm like, dude, just be you. Like, see the version of you.

0:18.6

You don't have to try to be like me. You don't have to try to be like somebody else.

0:21.5

Like, you have unique characteristics. Now there are things that you do need to do to be

0:26.2

successful. Like, you know, all ping pong players have, you know, certain fundamentals and skills

0:31.1

that they follow, but they all do it in their own unique style. And, you know, you found your

0:36.9

style later on. What I found interesting, speaking of the mental side, we were talking about this

0:41.7

pre show, you know, you talked about how you were getting killed during all these matches.

0:47.6

But you started to understand that for you, you were playing a different game. It was about winning

0:53.4

your game and having the small wins. Right. Tell me about that. So yeah. So, um, most of my matches,

0:59.6

I was getting killed. I was definitely the worst person in the pro level. At the bottom of the

1:04.8

bottom, right? Um, like I said, I started 17. Most of these guys started three, four, five, six,

1:09.6

you know, as kids. And um, but I was a great athlete. Like, I was MVP in every sport I ever played.

1:15.9

I was always a great athlete. And I thought my athleticism couldn't get me the wins. And,

1:22.3

and, and, and I didn't respect those athletes. That was the, I was another part about it. I didn't

1:27.6

have respect for what they did. And that's why I thought I could beat them easily. And I was getting

1:32.4

killed 11, 11, 11, two, 11, three, 11, one. So then, you know, there, there comes a time when you

1:39.1

eventually get tired of getting killed, right? And I said, okay, after a push is a different way.

1:46.0

What can I do better? What can I do better? And so I thought, you know what? Let me just stop

1:51.5

trying to win the match. Let me get five points, right? If I get five points in one game out of four,

1:57.8

I win. And so I would fight for these five points. And then my hair, I got to get five. And I fight
