Summary

Subscribe now for the full episode! Danny and Derek welcome back Brendan James and Noah Kulwin, of the Blowback podcast, for a tour through their latest season, which takes the show to Angola. They discuss how Angola became one of the largest and least-remembered battlefields of the Cold War, Reagan’s return to proxy wars, Cuba’s decision to send troops without Soviet approval, South Africa’s “total onslaught” ideology, the Reagan era’s fanaticism, its echoes in today’s politics, and what happens when the U.S. exports its wars (and mythology) across continents. That's kind of conversation to your soul.

Hello, Prestige Heads, and welcome to American Prestige. I'm Danny Bessner, here as always with my friend and comrade Derek Davison.

0:28.4

And we are very excited to welcome back to the podcast today, the blowback boys, the blowback bros.

0:34.6

And that is, of course, Brendan James and Noah Cohen, who just released their

0:38.6

latest season of the Fantastic Series Blowback, which I have been listening to for years,

0:43.6

1:01.1

dump? Why don't we just jump right in and tell us why Angola and maybe how does this fit into

1:07.9

the larger blowback project that you guys have been doing for a while now?

1:16.6

But I'm curious, how does this fit in?

1:18.7

What do you guys think you're doing with the blowback series in general and all that stuff?

1:22.9

Well, I think one thing we realized this season, because there's a way that it manifests, particularly

1:30.0

with Angola and around the time of this season, is we've been providing a little bit,

1:35.5

at first not knowing it, a history of American Contras, you know, the foot soldiers of the Cold War

1:42.9

that we sort of subcontracted in the different

1:46.6

hot spots across the globe. I mean, in the season on Cuba, we talked about the Cuban exiles,

1:52.5

who became very important in different parts of Latin America. There's obviously the Mujahideen

1:59.0

that we covered in season four.
