Summary

In this special podcast episode, MSNBC’s Ari Melber sits down with Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) to discuss his favorite artists, some of his provocative lyrics and why Dave Chappelle is one of “his dearest friends for life.” We also dig into the archives from Ari’s 2018 interview with Dave Chappelle and then Maryland gubernatorial candidate Ben Jealous, to discuss why Chappelle decided to endorse a political candidate, followed by a deep analysis of Chappelle’s comedy in the Trump era.

I'm going to take you inside Brooklyn Museum, where I sit down with Brooklyn's own Yassim Bay to explore his new art exhibit in the interview, which was much longer than what we got to air on TV. So you're about to hear the whole full thing. Yassine discusses some of his political lyrics. He actually then did an impromptu performance of one of them on the spot, which for me was really cool. He also talks about which artists he's listening to right now, some living, some deceased. All of them really interesting names, If like me, you love getting new. Music tips, and he talks about his bond with Dave Chappelle. After this new interview, you're also going to hear our interview then with Dave Chappelle when he appeared on the beat with Civil Rights Leader Ben Jealous. And after that, if you keep listening, you're going to hear my breakdown of how Dave Chappelle and other comedians' work applies to our politics in the Trump era today. We've put this all together for you as a bonus podcast. As always, thanks for listening to The Beat with Ari Melbert. Welcome to The Beat. We are coming to you from Brooklyn, New York at the Brooklyn Museum with Yassine Bay. Thanks for sitting down with me.
