Clive, we've talked before, I'm thrilled to be here with you at the Institute.

I have plenty of questions for you and I'm sure there's plenty of stories about

music and the arts and social change and a million things people are interested in, but before we even get into all that

just what does it mean to you to be here at the Institute what does it mean to be

part of what you've supported with with your energy and your resources and your expertise which is passing

music to a new generation at a time of tremendous change.

It's very special. It's very special to be here, look out among you. The vigor, the currency, the energy the

currency the energy coming out of the school

out of the Institute. I was so moved and gratified to learn that the students, I think you're up for is it 12

Grammys this year I think that's astonishing and I congratulate the Institute and of course

the nominees.

Look, this all started because I had, my parents died when I was

18, independent of each other, there was no cure for high blood pressure.

I ended up with four thousand dollars to my name and if it were not for the beneficence of others I got a scholarship to go to NYU Washington Square College and I got a scholarship to go to Harvard Law School so that when I was

in a position to give back, education was paramount in my thought process. I've got to give back

the way that I benefited in education.

And I was very conscious that there was an attitude towards

contemporary music, rock music, that was not being taught at Berkeley or Sanford or classical

music at respect, obviously deservedly Broadway show and what have you, but rock

music was not viewed in a way that was a growth cultural impact and having observed

through my lifetime the fact that it was rock music that got behind the iron curtain and that yes in every area and today

They know the Beatles they know Dylan they know Springsteen. So the combination of education and the
