Summary

2 Samuel shows us three different moves in the life of David: David’s triumphs, David’s transgressions, and David’s troubles. God will establish a dynasty through David; and God will have his line be king forever! But we also see that the forgiveness of sin does not mean that the troubles and consequences go away. Tune in today as we have Ben Krejci, from the Watermark Production Team, as he gives us overview of the book of 2 Samuel.

This is Join the Journey with your host, Emma Daughter.

0:16.0

Hey friends, thanks for joining. And today, Emma's not on the podcast. I know, it's just me. And if we

0:24.2

haven't met, my name is Ben Creachie, and I work on the production team at Watermark. And today,

0:28.6

I get to do an overview of the book of Second Samuel. Now, let's stop for a second. Before we get

0:33.6

into Second Samuel, let's not forget what happened in the first book. Like Emma mentioned,

0:38.3

in the First Samuel overview, the original manuscripts of First and Second Samuel was one scroll.

0:43.8

So today, as we study Second Samuel, we have to understand where we've been. In First Samuel,

0:49.1

we see God's people call for a king. Despite God taking care of them and being their king, they look to other

0:55.4

nations and wanted a king like them. So they got Saul. And now we get to see that Saul was really doomed

1:02.0

from the start. He wasn't the best king. And through 1 Samuel, we get to see the fall of Saul and the rise of David.

1:10.0

We got to see the way that David followed the Lord,

1:12.4

how he trusted in him, how he followed God's commandments, and was even anointed by God to be

1:17.4

king when Saul was rejected. In 1 Samuel, we get to see David's preparation to be king. And while

1:23.4

we see David's preparation, in 2nd Samuel, we see David's service. So what does that look

1:28.5

like? Let's split it up into three sections. David's triumphs in chapters 1 through 10, David's

1:34.1

transgressions in chapter 11, and David's troubles in 12 through 24. So to start, after learning

1:41.3

of Saul's death in chapter 1, David surprises everyone by lamenting

1:44.8

the death of Saul. You see, Saul hunted him and tried to kill him for years, and yet we get a

1:50.7

beautiful look into David's character. Despite all the running and hiding he did from a man

1:55.2

trying to kill him, he stopped and honored Saul and Jonathan. And then chapter 2 starts with the phrase after this, David inquired of the Lord.
