| 0:00.0 | Hello everyone and welcome to the slash film show. Today is Tuesday, July 25th, |
| 0:03.8 | 2023 on today's episode of the show we're going to be talking about the biggest |
| 0:08.1 | movie weekend in years and also touch on a bunch of other film and TV news. My name is Ben Pearson. I'm an editor at slash film.com and I'm joined on today's episode by slash film writer and box office analyst Ryan Scott. |
| 0:20.0 | Hey hey everyone, how's it going? Ryan, is that a fair characterization, the biggest movie weekend in years? |
| 0:25.0 | Easily, without exaggeration. |
| 0:29.0 | Okay, so Barbie and Oppenheimer both debuted and we talked about both of those movies on last week's show. |
| 0:35.6 | We did a big spoiler episode on Friday, so go back and listen to that if you've seen these movies |
| 0:40.3 | and want to know, you know, sort of our takes on them I guess but let's get into the |
| 0:44.7 | box office performance because as we've mentioned it's it's been kind of astounding. |
| 0:50.4 | Yeah so in short, you know, this was the biggest box office weekend since Avengers |
| 0:58.3 | End game in 2019. And some history was made here in a lot of ways. |
| 1:06.8 | So Barbie became so much bigger |
| 1:11.4 | than anyone like could have possibly imagine. |
| 1:14.4 | I think the box office tracking for this I think two weeks ago was 80 million and that |
| 1:18.2 | that would have been let's be very clear. |
| 1:20.3 | 80 million would have been awesome. |
| 1:22.0 | Like it would have been like oh my god the Barbie the very weird Barbie movie opened to 80 million dollars. It opened to a hundred and sixty two million dollars and on Sunday by the way estimates were 155, so it just kept going up. |
| 1:35.6 | So, you know, that's domestic. And so I think they already counted the Monday numbers here on the numbers but we're looking at |
| 1:45.2 | the global total right now at 382.3 million dollars already for Barbie which is incredible. |
| 1:51.3 | Wow. So like I was sort of thinking that movie might do 400 million in total. You know there was a part of me which again wouldn't have been bad like it would have been all right you know that's that's whatever but like yeah so yeah I mean that's in that you know it's the by definitely like unquestionably the biggest opening weekend ever for a movie directed by a woman. Congratulations to Greta Gerwig. It looked like Captain Marvel was going to kind of hold that because Captain Marvel was co-directed by Anna Bowden, but Greta Gerwig now stands alone. |
| 2:23.0 | However, as you mentioned, this was a huge weekend. |
| 2:26.5 | People look about this on the calendar all year because |
