Summary

In 1910, music hall performer Belle Elmore went missing. Her husband Dr Hawley Harvey Crippen claimed Belle had gone to America to visit a dying relative. But before long, Crippen's stories began to unravel and the doctor went on the run, triggering an international manhunt. Hallie Rubenhold re-examines Crippen's crimes in her new book Story of a Murder, and she spoke to Ellie Cawthorne about what this infamous case can reveal about medicine, the music hall and women's lives at the time. (Ad) Hallie Rubenhold is the author of Story of a Murder: The Wives, the Mistress and Dr Crippen (Transworld Publishers, 2025). His historian Hallie Rubenhold re-examines the infamous case of Dr. Crippin in her new book,

1:05.9

I think it's fair to say, one of the biggest news stories of the day. But for any listeners

1:10.7

who might not be familiar with Dr. Cripp stories of the day. But for any listeners who might not be familiar

1:12.8

with Dr. Crippen and the murder of Bell Elmore, could you introduce us to this case?

1:19.6

Yes, I mean, at the time, as you suggested, it was known as the Crime of the Century. It was in

1:26.6

every newspaper around the world, in so many

1:31.3

different languages, all over the world. And the reason for that was because part of what

1:38.4

happened, as it unfolded in the public, was an enormous international manhunt for Crippin and Ethel Leneve, who was his mistress,

1:47.6

who he went on the run with, dressed as father and son. And the whole world was looking for them.

1:53.1

And this was unfolding in real time in the newspapers. And the newspapers at the time

1:58.7

would publish two editions a day. So you could follow the progress twice a day.

2:03.9

So like a type of reality drama and people were completely wrapped up in this.

2:09.6

So it's this huge, exciting, dramatic story.

2:12.5

And I can see that that would have drawn you to it as an author.
