I'm here with my co-director, Mike Murphy, for our last bully pulpit of the

semester, an unscheduled one on Bob Dole, it's called Bob Dole remembered. Mitchell, Mike Petit,

is our guest. He served as an administrative assistant, chief of staff, presidential campaign advisor for Senator Dole.

He's a former board member of the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas,

and he's just returned from the service on Capitol Hill where Senator Dole has been lying in state.

I think I want to begin, as the Democrat on this panel,

with a kind of personal remorse. In the 1972 campaign, where I was George McGovern's speechwriter,

there was no fiercer critic of McGovern than Robert Dole, who was chairman of the Republican National Committee as well as being a senator.

And what struck me was that two or three years later, in the 1970s, they were working closely together to save and expand food stamps, to pass all sorts of

federal nutrition programs.

I was the staff director and chief counsel of the Senate committing on nutrition and

human needs and worked with Senator Dole, alongside Senator McGovern.

And he was conservative without question, but he was also

compassionate, and for him it wasn't just a slogan. I remember in 1976 when he was the vice

presidential nominee with Gerald Ford, and he was receiving a lot of criticism. I wrote a column called

Dole's Other Side that said, this is a complex person. Sure, he's a tough politician, and he's an

effective one, but he's also someone who, after the war, when he was wounded, was in a full body

cast, laid in a hospital for Mike would know exactly how long,
