Why did you become first interested in the Crusades?

Why do you feel like this is something to dedicate your life to and write about?

Well, I think it started off on a personal level.

My heritage and my background, I'm what's called a Coptic Egyptian or Coptic Christian,

basically the indigenous inhabitants of Egypt who were originally Christian.
