This episode takes us behind the scenes of director Gurendar Chada's new comedic drama Blinded by the Light.

The film tells the story of Javed, a British teen of Pakistani descent, growing up in

1987 England amidst the racial

and economic turmoil of the times of the Thatcher era.

He writes poetry to escape the intolerance of his hometown and the inflexibility of his

traditional father, but when a classmate introduces him to the music of the boss, his

world is turned upside down.

In addition to Blinded by the Light, Ms. Chada's credits include the feature films Baji on the Beach,

Bend It Like Beckham, Bride in Prejudice, It's a Wonderful Afterlife, and Angus Thongs and Perfect Snogging, and episodes of the series Beacham House.

Following a recent screening of the film at the Harmony Gold Theater in Los Angeles,

Ms. Chada spoke with director Catherine Hardwick about filming Blinded by the Light.

During their conversation, she discusses how her own interest in Springsteen's music as a teenager

shaped the film, when she met and convinced Springsteen to allow her to make the film,

and how choreographing the lyrics into Javid's journey in a meaningful way was crucial to get just

right.
