My dear Senator, this letter to you is just a timely little advice while everything

is fresh in my memory. I see you're trying to keep company with my common-law wife, Edith Burton,

after I asked her to be sure and drop you and not see you again. Tonight, Sunday, December 6 at 6 o'clock,

you did not notice passing me on Hick Street going with her to her home at 51 Poplar. Well, I was there,

and I saw you both, and I'm writing this letter to tell you the whole truth about the matter. I know all that

has been going on between you and Edith, but her mother don't. I'll explain. Friday night,

December 4th, Edith and myself had dinner in New York together. She told me you, the senator, wanted to

marry her, and she told me that if she did it, it would be

very great help to me and get me free of all the trouble I'm in at the Hotel Latham.

The proposition was that she marry you, as she explained to me, that you had lots of money.

Then she was to get control of at least $100,000 in her name after her marriage to you,

and send me $50,000 to buy my way clear of all the trouble I'm in by paying back the hotel

and the bonding company what I owe them. She said you're an old man, 73, and won't live much longer,

and if need be, she would see that you'd get your green.

If you don't know what that means, I'll tell you, you were to be given daily a slow dose of poison

and die. Then, she said she and myself would come back to the city free and could live openly

together. I have been Edith's lover and sweetheart for the past five years.

We cannot live together as the laws after me.

Now she thinks she has a way to get me straightened out by handling you as proposed, and
