I first became aware of Lechley Park in the 70s.

Just when everyone started talking about Enigma.

When I was young, one of the first things I was taught was to spell my name in Morse code.

And my mum used to tell me stories about how she was in signals during the war and taught me Morse.

I thought no more of this.

She's had a very exciting war.

And then in the 70s, I actually watched a television play called The Imitation game,

which was set in Bletchley Park.

And I said to my mother, is that anything like

your war? And she said, well, I was actually there. I was at Bletchley. That's where I did my

signals. And then gradually, bit by bit, I just understood the tremendous importance of Bletchley

Park and the scope of the work and what went on here.

I don't know as a girl you kind of dismiss anything that your parents do as a little bit dull

or not very important. And, you know, she'd been a housewife and mother, a lot like the women

in the Bletchley Circle. And she came alive when she talked about the war.

It was a focused, exciting thing to do.

And bit by bit, I realised the significance of those eight-hour shifts

and being bust in and having to get every, she was in signals,

having to listen to that morse, having to focus the dials until you got it absolutely right and not make any error, just a concentration.

So I started asking her about it, but I think it's hard.

If you've actually repressed a memory and not talked about it for so long, it's very difficult to remember the details because they were told to bury it, wipe it.

And then the script for Bletchley Circle kind of lands on my desk without anyone knowing there's any connection.
