| 0:10.0 | Today is the feast day of Blessed Salanas Casey. |
| 0:17.0 | He is one of my favorite soon to be Saints |
| 0:22.0 | because he spent most of his time in Detroit and he's a |
| 0:27.0 | saint of the 20th century so he's not that long ago and I used to love to go down to the Franciscan Monastery in downtown Detroit and go to the tomb of Father Salanas. |
| 0:42.0 | But I love him even more for his motto. So let's begin in the |
| 0:49.1 | name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. |
| 0:51.2 | Amen. Let's call to mind all those we've promised to pray for. |
| 0:56.3 | Now Salanas Casey was born November 25, 1870 and grew up in Wisconsin. He entered the Franciscans there in 1894, |
| 1:08.0 | but even though the seminary, as I said was in Wisconsin, |
| 1:12.0 | everything was taught in Latin and German. |
| 1:15.0 | Two languages Casey could not grasp. |
| 1:19.0 | And because of his difficulty with these new languages, the heads of the seminary concluded that |
| 1:27.4 | he was not very intelligent. |
| 1:30.2 | So when they ordained him, they would not grant him permission to preach public homilies or hear confessions. |
| 1:38.0 | Now he was allowed to pray mass privately and do the duties of other Franciscan brothers, but that was it. |

| 1:49.8 | And even more humbling was that they made him the door man at the monastery. So Casey was |
| 1:58.8 | very misunderstood because he was actually very intelligent and one could say that he was treated unjustly. |
