Summary

Romans 4:6-9 - just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works: 7 “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; 8 blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin.”

Romans 2:12-16 - For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. 13 For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. 14 For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them 16 on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.

And the apostle Paul who wrote this letter, this epistle is what it's called, is pointing us back to the things

that have happened in the past, the ways that God has dealt with other people as examples of the way he continues to deal

with people, just like you and me.

And in verse 6 of chapter 4, he refers back to David, who was a king in Israel.

He was a man God himself said was after his own heart.

But also was a man who had experienced his set of challenges and his

1:07.3

particular struggles with sin and betrayal against God, really. And he's using David as an example to show us what God's attitude is about our

behavior and about our state or sense of righteousness. Let's read it and we will come back and talk about it.

1:26.2

In verse six he says just as David also speaks of the blessings of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works.

And we were talking about the power of sin to destroy and to continue festering if things are not

not doing a bunch of penance and trying to prove

yourself worthy or to redeem yourself through better behavior in the future.
