So when I was younger, I quickly learned that my family was very religious. I didn't realize

this early on because when you're a fish in water, how do you describe what water is? And as I got

older and began questioning things, I realized just how religious my family was. Now, keep in mind,

I was a junior Bible quiz champion multiple years in a row. I was very active in

church, and because my parents were in the military, we moved around a lot. So I not only got my

start in Cogic and holiness-style churches, where Pentecost and the speaking of tongues and the laying

on of hands and shouting and being slain in the spirit was all a thing, but we also had time to visit

Baptist denominations and non-denominational denominations.

And that meant that we were exposed to everything from the most culturally black of churches

to the most lily white of churches where we might be the only black family.

No joke.

It was rough at times.

But one of the things I'm realizing as I grow older is that oftentimes

being that steeped in anything, be it a religion or a cultural belief or just whatever it is,

can sometimes blind you to the way the rest of the world is living. And that sort of tension is

what's at the heart of something the Supreme Court did last Friday.

In a 6-3 opinion in a case entitled Mahmoud v. Taylor, this opinion, which was written by Justice

Samuel Alitam, who is, as you will know if you've listened to my show, one of the biggest

hoes on the court.
