Summary

Black Monday wasn't quite Black Monday this year — mostly because it extended from Sunday to Tuesday. The Denver Broncos fired Vic Fangio before most of the rest of the league even kicked off on Week 18, and after waffling for an extra day, the New York Giants parted ways with Joe Judge in a surprisingly unsurprising move on Tuesday. Between then, the Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings & Chicago Bears also relieved Brian Flores, Mike Zimmer & Matt Nagy of their respective services. After kicking off the podcast chatting about what drove the highest ratings for the NFL in a half-decade, Charles Robinson & Yahoo's Dan Wetzel deep dive into the five major head coach roles that opened up this week and what fans could expect next. Why the surprising move out of Miami? Will Minnesota be a coveted job, or is Kirk Cousins radioactive? Which current coordinator is the leader in the clubhouse for the Broncos job? (19:40)Next, Charles & Dan take a listener question and rank the performance of 2021's slate of rookie head coaches. Now, obviously Urban Meyer is last in that line, but we promise, the results will surprise you. (53:35)Finally, the guys look ahead to this weekend's slate of Wild Card games and preview Raiders/Bengals, Patriots/Bills, Eagles/Buccaneers, 49ers/Cowboys, Steelers/Chiefs & Cardinals/Rams. Back in 2017, I was sitting with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones in training camp, talking

0:10.4

about the state of the league.

0:12.1

We were chewing on his upcoming Hall of Fame speech, batting around the idea of the league

0:16.1

somehow getting a marketing foothold in China, and finished up talking a bit about the declining

0:21.1

ratings in sports television, which at the time was just beginning to hit the NFL.

0:26.1

Now, Jones has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to the marketing and television

0:30.2

end of the NFL. And I remember on this particular occasion, he referenced a quote-unquote golden

0:35.4

zone for the league when it came to US television audiences. Specifically, it was bracketed

0:40.9

between 17 and 18 million average viewers during the regular season. For the first part of that

0:46.6

decade, the league had basically set up a permanent residence in that golden zone.

0:51.5

So much so that from 2010 to 2015, the NFL had only fallen out of that zone once,

0:57.3

when one year the average viewership sank back to 16.6 million.

Jones said to me, when you've got over 17 million watching as an average, that's a good benchmark.

1:08.0

And he was talking about television deals. He said, now it may fluctuate depending on

1:12.7

some different things, but you have something going pretty special and you can say that you've got

1:17.2

more than 17 million people watching on an average. The question is how to continue growing that,

1:22.8

moving forward. That exchange with Jones took on some importance this week, because the NFL had

1:29.4

fallen out of that golden zone for the last five years, causing a bit of hand-raining for the league

1:34.7

and even some of the networks that had shelled out massive broadcast rights deals.

1:39.6

But everyone in the system applauded some good news this week. The league's average regular

1:44.3

season viewership perked up considerably this season, jumping 10% over last year,

1:50.2

from 15.6 million to 17.1 million. We'll get to what fueled it, but first,
