The In an interview that was conducted during the third season of the Twilight Zone,

Rod Sailing expressed his fatigue with the show. He said I'm tired of it, as most

people are when they do a series for three years. I was tired after the fourth show. It's been

a good series, it's not been consistently good, but I don't know any one series that is consistently good when

you shoot each episode in three days.

We've been trying gradually to get away from the necessity of a gimmick, but the show has

the stamp of the gimmick and it's hooked for now.

It's tough to come up with them week after week.

And this wasn't the only time that Rod Sailing spoke about his growing exhaustion as the series progressed.

By the fifth season, his fatigue must have been even more pronounced.

And if he felt that the show was relying too heavily

on the twist-ending gimmick as he called it, perhaps in its fifth year it needed to evolve.

With other writers taking on the lion's share of writing duties in season five, Rod Sailing

wrote only six episodes.

It was clear that times were changing and new themes emerging.
